Minnesota Snow Facts

The Twin Cities accumulates an average of nearly four feet of snow every year, but we all know Minnesota snowstorms can be unpredictable. As every school child can tell you, 'snow days' in MN aren't always something that you can count on, but when they do happen, they can be severe.

Safe Snow Plowing and Removal

Parkway Lawn uses the safest snow plowing and removal techniques, offering you the safest solution to all your snow removal and ice control needs. For very reasonable snowplowing rates we'll keep your driveways, sidewalks and parking lots snow and ice free while saving you all the grunt work and snow shovel back injuries.

Whether you want us to keep your driveway clear while you're on vacation or need a snow removal contract for the duration of the season, Parkway Lawn is willing to work with you. We'll make sure your car can get into the garage, your steps are clear of ice and your mail can be delivered. Trade in your snow boots and shovel for a cup of coffee and the morning paper. Who wants to take the risks of shoveling anyway?

Why Not Shovel?

Shoveling can be a good workout if you're in shape. You can compare shoveling the average American driveway to a weightlifting session or running a 12-minute mile. Thirty minutes of shoveling burns about 200 calories. Keep in mind though that winter weather conditions can put extra strain on your body. Even if you're being careful and scooping/pushing snow, the health hazards of scooping snow still exist.

The work you do while shoveling combined with cold winter temperatures forces the heart to work harder to get oxygen-rich blood through your body. If you have heart conditions, had a heart attack or have other cardiovascular issues, you should think twice about heading out after a snow storm. On top of that, if you snow shovel, back injury may be a possible result as well.

Some hospitals and physicians claim heart attacks triple for men 35-49 years of age in winter months. In February of 2007 Vermont, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois and Michigan all reported between two and five deaths due to snow shoveling.

How Much Is Snow Removal?

That depends on what you want. We're happy to offer you fair snow removal prices for whatever snow removal and ice control needs you have. Whether you want a full season contract for b2b snow plowing or only want to call us when the snow is really heavy we're happy to work with you to help you have the most enjoyable winter possible.

Snow Shovel Back Injury

While most winter injuries are not that severe, there are still plenty of injuries that can occur from shoveling or falling on an icy walk. We've all been sore after snow blowing or shoveling. Some of us have even had the infamous snow shovel back injury. Improper shoveling technique and the temperature play a major role in most cases.

Once the temperature drops to the mid-30's and below, your spinal discs become more brittle and subject to injury. Here are a few tips that can help keep you healthy while shoveling this winter:
  • Lift small amounts
  • Lift with your legs instead of your back
  • Throw snow forward. Twisting to throw snow sideways or backwards puts more stress on spinal discs and can cause them to rupture.
  • Use an ergonomic shovel (it has a bend in the handle)
  • Use a snow blower. It will save your back, but can be dangerous to operate.
  • Always dress appropriately for the weather conditions. Layers work best for trapping heat close to your body.
  • Forget the first six tips. Walk down your freshly shoveled steps in your bathrobe to get your paper and wave to your neighbor as he's stuck snow blowing the mountain left by the snow plow at the end of his driveway. (You may want to suggest that he/she call Parkway Lawn and ask about their snow removal service like you did months ago!)
